Llandudno's major performance venue — ideal for a dress-up, go-out evening: touring shows, comedy, concerts and major events, all a short walk from the guest house.
Venue Cymru is North Wales most significant arts venue -- a 1,500-seat theatre, conference centre and arena sitting right on the promenade in the centre of Llandudno, with the bay on one side and the town behind it. It programmes drama, musicals, opera, dance, stand-up comedy, live music and children shows throughout the year, and draws major touring productions that would otherwise not reach this part of Wales.
There has been a theatre on this site since 1894, when the Victoria Palace opened as a concert hall for Jules Riviere, the celebrated conductor of the Llandudno Pier Orchestra, and his 42-piece ensemble. The building went through several incarnations over the following century -- the Llandudno Opera House, the Hippodrome, the Arcadia -- and was home for decades to the popular seaside summer shows, including Catlin Follies, which ran until 1968. Ken Dodd was a regular performer in its later years.
The current North Wales Theatre opened in 1994, was substantially expanded between 2005 and 2007 at a cost of over eleven million pounds, and renamed Venue Cymru in 2006 -- a name chosen from 292 public submissions. The arena added during the expansion holds up to 2,500 standing, making the full complex capable of hosting over 5,000 people across all its spaces.
For guests at The Rosedene, Venue Cymru is a ten-minute walk along the promenade. It is well worth checking the programme before you visit -- there is usually something on worth catching, and the Y Review Restaurant offers pre-show dining with views over the bay.
