A polished whisky experience close to the centre: tours, tastings and a premium Welsh brand story — ideal as a late afternoon plan before dinner, or a wet-weather highlight.
Penderyn is Wales most celebrated whisky distillery -- award-winning, exported to over 50 countries, and holder of more than 120 gold medals. Its second distillery opened in Llandudno in May 2021, just a couple of blocks from the promenade, and has quickly become one of the town most interesting visitor attractions.
The distillery is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II listed former Board School on Lloyd Street, a Victorian building that retains much of its original character -- parquet floors, wall tiling, roof timbers and the original metal staircase all survived the conversion. It is now the dedicated home of Penderyn peated whiskies, giving it a distinctive character of its own within the broader Penderyn range.
Guided tours run Wednesday to Sunday and last around an hour. They take in the exhibition area, the distilling hall with its innovative single copper-pot Faraday still -- which produces spirit at 92%, giving Penderyn its characteristic light and fruity style -- and end with tastings in the bar, where you can try two samples from the range including whisky, rum, gin and other spirits. Miniatures are available for drivers. Weekend masterclasses go deeper into the process and last around two and a half hours.
The shop is open seven days a week from 9am and stocks the full Penderyn range. Booking in advance is recommended for tours. The main entrance is at the rear of the building via St Mary Road, where there is also a car park.
